Job Description and Requirements
During the first, third, and fourth weeks of Spring Clean-Up, work consists of cleaning Harvard undergraduate dorms for alumni and summer school students. Work is conducted in crews of 6–12 students led by an undergraduate captain. Dorm Crew work is strenuous but fun; you will be working eight hours a day on such tasks as sweeping, removing trash, mopping, and dusting. You must notify us in advance if you have physical disabilities that will prevent you from carrying out regular work.
You can choose how long to stay for Spring Clean-Up, and when to work. The following describe your options:
1. Pre-Commencement Only
You must commit to work from 8:00–4:30 each day from Monday, May 16 to Friday, May 20. You will receive housing through Saturday, May 21.
2. Pre-Commencement and Reunion Week
You must commit to the hours listed in 1 above. You may work either a competitive job or a non-competitive job during Reunion Week. If you choose to seek a competitive job, Dorm Crew will evaluate your work during Pre-Commencement and will have the discretion of granting you a competitive job. If you choose to work a lower-wage non-competitive job, you should apply through the Harvard Alumni Association. See the Reunion Jobs page for more information about the specific competitive and non-competitive jobs. Depending on which Reunion Job you have, you may be required to work between Sunday, May 20 and Sunday, May 27. For noncompetitive, you will receive housing through 3:00pm on Sunday, May 27. For competitive, you will receive housing through 8:00am on Monday, May 28.
3. Pre-Commencement, Reunion Week, and Post-Commencement
You must commit to the hours listed in 1 above and will work Reunion Week as listed in 2 above. You may work for as many days as you wish up through Friday, June 8. You will receive housing for as long as you work; the day after your last day of work, you will be removed from housing..
4. Post-Commencement only (for graduating seniors)
Many seniors choose to work Post-Commencement only. You will move into Dorm Crew housing immediately after Commencement. You will begin work on Tuesday, May 29, and may work as long as you like through Friday, June 8. You will receive housing for as long as you work; the day after your last day of work, you will be removed from housing.
Wages
The Spring Clean-Up pay rate is currently $11.80 per hour. Term-time Dorm Crew workers employed in May will continue at their term-time pay rate if it is higher.
The pay period runs from Sunday through Saturday. Employees who work over 40 hours during this period will earn time-and-a-half for any hours over 40.
If you are a current Harvard employee, we strongly urge you to get direct deposit now for quicker receipt of your checks. Instructions for setting up direct deposit are available in our Payroll section. For all other students, your checks will be mailed to your campus address—be sure to turn on mail forwarding.
Sign-Up Process
The first step of the application process is the online application, available here.
We will contact applicants with a decision via email within two weeks of application submission. This email will include instructions regarding employment paperwork. Depending on your payroll and citizenship status, you may have to come to the Dorm Crew office to complete these forms. The sign-up process is not complete until all forms have been submitted.
Please note that your commitment and availability to work Spring Clean-Up must be confirmed via email during reading period and exam period, so please check and respond to your email during these times. If you miss any of the deadlines for responding to confirmation emails or filling out paperwork, your application will be terminated.
Dorm Crew reserves the right to refuse employment to students if they have performed unsatisfactorily for us or the Harvard Alumni Association in the past.
Important information about housing
We can only provide you with housing as long as you are working for us! If you miss part of a workday, or fail to notify us in advance about an unavoidable medical conflict, you will be removed from housing, even if this means you have to change your travel arrangements. Your housing is offered on the condition of your work; squatters may be subject to disciplinary action by the College.
Housing, Safety, and Alcohol Policies
Housing
Housing will be provided for all employees who request it and who are current undergraduates in Harvard College. Employees should understand that they will not be housed in their term-time rooms unless they are graduating seniors. Graduating seniors working Post-Commencement will have to vacate their term-time room on the normal senior move-out date, at which point they will be able to move into their Dorm Crew housing. Standard housing rules will be in force. Under no circumstances will an employee be allowed to house guests. Rule infractions will be subject to review and disciplinary action by the Administrative Board. Employees should note that they may have to relocate to different temporary-housing rooms at any point as maintenance demands.
Housing will be provided during Reunion Week for those working both Pre-Commencement Clean-Up and Post-Commencement Clean-Up, regardless of whether or not they receive a Reunion Week Job. If, however, an employee is housed during Reunion Week on the pretense of working Post-Commencement Clean-Up, and then does not work Post-Commencement Clean-Up, the employee’s action will be considered a breach of contract, and the employee will be term-billed $150 for each day they lived in the room and did not work. Employees must clear their temporary-housing rooms of trash when they leave, otherwise they will be term-billed.
We cannot honor requests to be housed in a certain dorm or house, and, even if you will be living in the same dorm or house as your termtime housing, we cannot honor requests to remain in your termtime room. However, if you would like to be housed with another employee already placed in the same house as you, simply pick up your keys together, with all individuals present, on the morning of move-out and move-in. We cannot promise that all requests will be granted.
Please note that, due to the fact that students move out as others are moving in, Dorm Crew does not clean bridge-housing or temporary-housing rooms. We cannot be responsible for temporary housing that is left in bad condition by its former occupants. You should notify us of any damage to your temporary housing when you move in, or else you may be held responsible for it when you move out.
Employees must vacate housing by 8:00am following their last full day of work.
Safety
Spring Clean-Up work can be physically demanding. Students who have moderate to severe asthma, allergies to dust or cleaning chemicals, or any conditions that would prevent them from performing the necessary tasks should contact the Dorm Crew office before filling out an application. All students will be required to adhere to the following safety regulations:
- Employees must wear long pants and sturdy, closed-toed shoes (tennis shoes are fine, but sandals are not).
- Any worker who reports to work in inappropriate attire will be sent home to change and will not be compensated for the missed time.
- A worker who compromises the safety of him/herself or others will be subject to immediate termination of employment and housing.
Alcohol Policy
The consumption or possession of alcohol in the Freshman Dorms, or theft of any form will not be tolerated and will be subject to review and disciplinary action by the Administrative Board. Any employee who consumes alcohol during working hours will be subject to immediate termination of employment and housing.
Move-out information from FAS
The College encourages students to send items home as early as possible. Complete information about shipping will be available beginning in May in the Distribution Center in each House.
Remember to change your address with all correspondents: credit card companies, magazines, friends and family.
A Harvard Student Mail Forwarding Card will be put in your mailbox. You can change your address on the World Wide Web. http://www.uos.harvard.edu/smfc. Do not fill out a United States Postal Service form 3575 to forward your mail.
Students are responsible for leaving their suite in the same condition as they found it in the fall. All rooms must be free of trash and recyclable items and swept clean. All College owned furniture removed during the school year must be returned to the room. All personal belongings including unwanted furniture, books, etc. must be taken to designated areas for donation or disposal. Students will be charged individually or as a rooming group for suites that are left in poor condition.
After vacating your suite, be sure to return your original coded keys to the Building Manager’s Office. Uncoded keys are not acceptable. Failure to return the coded keys will result in a charge of $25.00 per key on your term bill.
All underclassmen must vacate their rooms by Sunday, May 13th at Noon.
Seniors must vacate their rooms by Friday, May 25th at 5:00 P.M.
